Keeping animals in zoos: A* article

Could your conscience cope with the idea of depriving innocent animals of their freedom just for our merriment? Although there are some proponents of caging animals, I believe this is a notion of utter absurdity.

Firstly, from my point of view, zoo enclosures fall short of serving the needs of all animals. No one can deny the fact that even the finest man-made environment in a zoo fails to offer the exceptional space, diversity and incomparable freedom of animals’ natural habitat. For example, it will be virtually impossible to replicate an ideal habitat for migratory animals such as elephants. Ultimately, this can cause animals to become increasingly stressed and aggressive, putting the lives of both the visitors and the very animals we showcase at risk.

Secondly, what infuriates me about keeping animals in zoo is the way it sets an improper image for future generations. Zoos’ portrayal of animal confinement will most assuredly obstruct nurturing of humane and empathetic behaviour in children. As a result, they may perceive animals as creatures bereft of feelings, thus casting doubt on the future of rare animals.

To sum up, it is my core belief that keeping animals in zoos is simply nonsensical, not only because of our failure to replicate pristine nature, but also due to the distortion it causes to children’s moral compass.
