SEMANTIC ANALYSIS OF A SPEECH ON WORLD AIDS DAY

INTRODUCTION

Humans communicate and interact with one another using language in a multitude of ways. When we encounter language, whether spoken or written, quite a lot takes place than simply hearing a sequence of sounds or reading chunks of language. How we communicate with these stretches of language continues to be a central issue among linguists and researchers. Semantic or discourse analysis attempts to uncover how units of language are organised and the natural patterns of language use, and through its application help speakers to communicate effectively.

This paper aims to analyse an extract of a speech and identify the cohesive ties of the discourse. It includes information about the context of the extract and the analysis of its cohesive devices including verb form, parallelism, referring expressions, repetition, lexical chains, substitution, ellipsis and conjunction. The paper finally explains how coherence has been achieved overall in the text. A copy of the extract and the full speech are included in Appendix 1 and 2 respectively.
