Tablets in the classroom – A* Article

The public is divided about your government’s recent proposal to replace textbooks with tablets in all schools across the country. Here are some comments people have expressed in this regard.

“Finally, it’ll relieve my second-grader from a lot of backache. Need I say his backpack weighs almost 15kgs?”

“More screen time? Don’t they know how much strain it’s going to put on the children’s eyes?”

Write an article to your school magazine expressing your views on the issue.

Tablets in classroom: a curate’s egg

Wave goodbye to textbooks and say hello to tablets? While many people are hailing the government’s recent plan as a revolutionary move, some people are filled with incredulity. This seemingly novel yet admittedly apposite concept of introducing tablets to classrooms cuts both ways, to say the least.

From one perspective, I firmly believe that the proposal to supplant textbooks by tablets will enhance students’ learning ability. It is a no brainer that textbook contents are limited and often run outdated.  With internet access at students’ disposal on their tablets, they need not be restricted to only what is available in the textbooks as endless panoply of exciting and up-to-date information awaits at their fingertips. This, together with the flexibility these handheld devices offer, means students can effortlessly browse and learn any titbits on any subject anywhere convenient.

On the other side of the coin, some sceptics maintain that this proposal will backfire as it will be a mere distraction. Their argument is backed with the idea that the side-tracking possibilities like social media and games on these devices mean students will do less studying and – understandably – more ‘playing’. This notion, in a broad sense, holds truth because teachers and parents can do little to manipulate how children use their ‘smart books’. Consequently, the chances are that students fray around in studies.

All in all, I am of the opinion that replacing books with tablets is the way forward in this technologically-advanced world as the possibility to revise all our subjects on one small device will irrefutably turn the corner in our academic lives. This innovative change will definitely be a big boon for all committed learners.
