An unforgettable dinner
By Rayyan Yusuf (Grade 8)
I was shaking with excitement as I sat and waited for the first course of my meal at Le Gavroche. Le Gavroche is said to be the fanciest restaurant in London presenting over 7 different cuisines. According to the locals, a dinner at Le Gavroche is an unforgettable experience and anyone who eats from there will remember the different tastes for the rest of their lives. These words kept on repeating in my head as I sat impatiently for my food to arrive.
After a few minutes of painful waiting (which felt like hours), our waiter came into the room with a magnificent array of platters with many beautiful colours. My mouth filled with saliva as I stared at the oncoming plates of food.
The first course was a soup. It had a plain colour but it was heavily seasoned. The different colours of many seasonings made me think of the ripe and savory taste which I was about to experience. I was almost right, it had a very savory, ripe taste but it was very spicy. The different tastes seemed to tell me to eat more every time I drank some and I found myself very disappointed when I finished my bowl of soup and none of my siblings seemed to give me a little bit of their soup, not even a spoonful!
The second course was served immediately after we finished the first course. They served a salmon-based dish which was called a ‘salmon rillete’. I assumed it was the main course since it was a three-course meal and it made sense that this course was the main course. The salmon was nicely cut into 3 parts and it was elegantly placed on the plate. I never really liked seafood before but this dish completely changed my mind. When I ate it, the flavours burst into my mouth. Hot, spicy, sour, salty – my brain couldn’t register the incoming flavours but I didn’t care because it tasted amazing in my mouth.
After the first two courses I felt content but since they served dessert, I accepted it wholeheartedly. They brought in a glass with two scoops of ice-cream which seemed to be chocolate flavoured. I felt slightly disappointed because I didn’t expect such a fancy restaurant to serve ice-cream, but the taste completely changed my mind, I didn’t know why a brown ice-cream would have coco-nutty taste with a hint of strawberry. It was also very syrupy, giving it a very strong sweet taste. My dad loved the ice cream so much he almost asked the waiter for the recipe.
Dinner at Le Gavroche is undoubtedly the best dinner I ever had. It was certainly an unforgettable one.
