Wonder is a wholesome family entertaining film which was released in 2017 and directed by Stephen Chbosky starring Jacob Templay, Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson. This film truly touched the heart of many in different ways.
The film revolves around Auggie -played by Jacob Templay- a 10 year old science geek and minecraft lover who has a rare face disfigurement and has gone through many successive surgeries since birth. Considering his condition, his caring parents -Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson- homeschooled him but now, big boy has to go to school without his astronaut helmet which he uses to cover his face from the outside world. Throughout school, he meets lots of people like Julian whose job is to be the rude, nasty bully and there is Jack who sees past Auggies’ looks to develop a friendship with him- their relationship, however, doesn’t go so smooth.
As we watch the film, we learn that Auggies sister, Via, also has problems of her own. She has grown up in a family focusing on Auggie that her own needs never come first. At first, she never seemed to question it, but the film truly shows how much it hits her and how lonely she feels sometimes-especially that her friend Miranda has been acting really off.
Midway through the film, you will realize how the makers have dealt with a dark issue in such bright light and a light-hearted way.The movie is filled with many positive messages such as friendship, acceptance and kindess. Like Summer -Auggies’ classmate once said “when given a choice between being right and being kind, choose kind”
Still wondering whether you should watch Wonder? You’ll miss out on a lot if you skip this one.
